Rotary Club of Sarasota's 38th Annual Pioneer Picnic
The 38th Annual Pioneer Picnic is October 7, 2012 at, Robarts Arena from noon until 3:00 p.m. A “Pioneer” is anyone who has lived in Sarasota County for at least 50 years. Each year, the Rotary Club of Sarasota welcomes hundreds of Pioneers and their families for a down-home, old Florida meal of BBQ, black-eyed peas, hushpuppies and “swamp cabbage,” a traditional favorite.
Pioneer Picnic is a homecoming, a family reunion and block party all in one. It’s not unusual to see four generations of a family enjoying lunch together or old friends smiling and shaking hands, having not seen each other since the year before. As one Rotarian said last year, “there’s a lot of love in the room at Pioneer Picnic.”
All pioneers, and their families, are invited to this community day, celebrating the contributions of our Pioneers that have made Sarasota County a great place to live, raise a family and call home.

The Honor Guard from Sarasota Military Academy will present the flag at the opening of the event and, this year, the Reverend Don Roberts, CEO of Goodwill Manasota, will deliver the invocation to the 800 or so expected to attend. The Sarasota Historical Society will be on hand with photos and info on the history of Sarasota. Special presentations will be made to the oldest in attendance , for the person having attended the most Pioneer Picnics and, this year, The Rotary Club of Sarasota Foundation will be awarding several grants to local nonprofits that meet the Foundation's mission of serving the youth of our community and making Sarasota a better place to call home.
