Troopers say a 7-year-old riding his bike is critically injured after he rode into the path of an oncoming Kenworth truck at University Parkway and Lockwood Ridge Road today.

A 7-year-old Sarasota child is in Bayfront Medical Center with critical injuries this afternoon after a truck struck him at University Parkway and Lockwood Ridge Road.

A Kenworth T800 truck driven by Tyler Bowser, 35 of Sarasota, drove on the right lane of University approaching Lockwood Ridge around 1:45 p.m. today while Isaiah Jackson rode his bike on Lockwood Ridge through the crosswalk on University, according to the Florida Higway Patrol.

The bike continued into the crosswalk into the path of the truck while the truck's traffic light was green, Highway Patrol said.

The truck braked but was unable to avoid Isaiah, who was not wearing a helmet on his Redline Roam bike, troopers said. About 151 feet of skidmarks could be seen on the road from the truck trying to stop, troopers added.

The truck struck the right side of the bike and ejected Isaiah from the bike, troopers said.

Charges are pending against the father for negligence, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

This article corrects the child's age. The mother of Isiah said the father inadvertently gave police the wrong age of their child to Florida Highway Patrol.
