Bachmann Comment in Sarasota Sparks Controversy

On Sunday Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann said that maybe the recent earthquake and hurricane are signs to politicians to cut spending. Her camp later said the comment was a joke.

At the  on Beneva Road, Bachmann the recent hurricane and earthquake were signs to Washington that it needs to cut spending.

"People wish the election was today. They are ready," she said. "And I don't know what God has to do to get the attention of the politicians. We had an earthquake, we've had a hurricane. He said 'are you going to start listening to me here?' Listen to the American people, because the American people are roaring right now. Because they know what needs to be done. They know that government is on a morbid obesity diet. It's gotta rein in the spending. This is not a difficult problem to solve."

Bachmann's camp on Monday clarified her remark in a statement to Talking Points Memo and said the comment was, "in jest."
