Good Idea/Bad Idea? Presidential Tears

Are you surprised at my tears, sir? Even President Barack Obama cries.

A video of President Barack Obama thanking his campaign staff went viral on Friday. The reason? It featured the reelected president welling up as he reminisced about his humble beginnings in Chicago.

After a long, hard-fought campaign — undoubtedly the president's last — it's hard to begrudge the man a few wistful tears.

But not everybody thinks Obama is genuine, even in this YouTube video of an unguarded moment in front of close-knit young staffers.

We've had a lot of viral moments in this campaign, including here in Sarasota with that Defeat Obama Sign back in January, a bizarre postcard from an election sign thief and of course, Joe Biden being Joe Biden during his visit in Sarasota, and as it closes, this one might be the most surprising.

So we put it to you: What do you think of the president's tears?

  • President Obama cried a little when thanking campaign staffers: Good idea or bad idea?

(Voting has been closed for this question)
    • Good idea! He's human! He has emotions! He's not a robot! Go on, let it out!
        45 (91%)
    • Bad idea! I don't see Ahmadinejad blubbering in front of whatever weird cabal keeps him in power!
        3 (6%)
    • There is literally no precedent for this. I have no idea how to react.

It was neither a good or bad idea. I don't think Obama thought " you know, I think I'm going to cry today ". Sociopaths might do that. But Obama is no sociopath. He is, however, human.

I believe they were a genuine sign of emotion, brought on by extreme fatigue that facilitated letting his guard down.

He's endured 4 years of racist, demeaning comments by half the country determined to see him fail for spite. Some leaders would sooner see the nation fail than see Obama succeed.

The fact that the nation re-elected him and vindicated his unswerving determination to do the best he can for this nation despite the rancor and discord has to be an emotional experience for anyone. You would have to be on the edge of sociopathic not to feel some sort of emotional gratitude.

Not EVERYTHING can be scripted for the cameras and journalists. Sometimes emotions just happen.

So true. All the hatred that is against him to succeed and get this country back on track, I would have cried too. There is so much evil in this world against people of color.

The President is human. He has every right to be emotionally full. I would think that folk on both sides of the aisle have shed some tears and rightly so. All of what has taken place during the campaign is and has been an emotional roller coaster.

When your heart sees its inner desires fulfilled the sense of gratification is exhibited by a yell, a shout , or even streams of tears. I genuinly beleive he rememberd his days being young fighting for a common course and witnessed with his own eyes results coming full circle. Thus the fulfillment of the heart.

At that point, fatigue was setting in, and it's no wonder he was emotionally overwhelmed.

With the kind of strength this man has shown during his first term, even with the hatred he's had to endure I think he should be allowed a show of emotion.

For the ones who had to dig into this and analyzed, if he meant to cry or not, GET A LIFE! The country is an awful mess and this president stood in dignity with all the lies, treats and disrespect. With all of that, he still believe in bringing a country together despite the obvious prejudice that still remain. I pray that God have mercy on you people that continue to judge wrongfully and hate without a cause. I rest assured that God have and will continue to sustain and bless the BEST PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES!

Am so happy to read the positive comments.
Our president has to be totally exhausted. The tears
certainly do not show lack of strenght but abundance
of character.

So, no one ever questions whether John Boehner's constant waterworks are real or a show, but Obama lets a few tears sneak out and it's a national phenomena? Please.

if you can't see genuine heartfelt emotion from this one tired man, from the hateful same old boring vitriolic racist spews that have come out in the open, to the lies, mountains of misinformation he's had to correct than perhaps you should ask, is there something wrong with me that i can't recognize genuine feelings from another human being?

I see there's a couple of neurotics on here. Unable to cry, walk around with a broomstick up their arse. Sorry you were born an incomplete human. Better luck next time.

I would rather hail to a Cheif that shared his open heart than one who thinks some people are not worth it.
There is strength and connection in vulnerability.

I am a black female, I never voted for Pres. Obama due to religious reason, but I have to respect this man. He is standing against mountains of racism, criticism, and complete and undeserved hatred. When he cried, he showed I am human, I hurt and I have emotions also. But, the best thing about it is; he is still standing. America bless God.

I concur. After experiencing the kind abuse that President Obama has been through within the last four years, he can do whatever he wants to do. The extreme behaviors exhibited by our fellow Americans have been shameful and evil especially in the presence of the children in our country as well as other countries. If any one thought that we were out of the dark ages in America before President Obama was elected, I hope that this display of hatred in the hearts of man has awaken the dead in you. Now, I pray, we, who understand will come together as one heart, one soul, one mind, and ultimately one body to continue to keep them safe.

So you're racist if you disagree with a black man, you people are nuts! What is racist is just about every African American voting for Obama just because he's black. You couldn't have voted for any other reason because African Americans are poorer and less driven to succeed since he took office

I didn't vote for obama this time. Does that make me a racist?? Or does that make me someone who doesn't agree with where he is taking the country?? People who are so quick to shout racism should realize their the ones who keep it alive. I see a lot of people saying God bless obama, someone who believes in gay marriage which is against God.

For C who said blacks are poor and less driven, you must be a white racist. There's lot's of people who are less fortunate than others of all races. Don't try to put us down. Its lots of African Americans are in very high places and don't act like you.let me remind you,LIKE YOU'RE PRESIDENT! So go lay up under the rock you came from or join us and celebrate moving forward like the rest of US. Also, no matter what color the President is, he still would of got my vote.
