Jeopardy Teen Show Features Pine View Student From Sarasota

The Pine View School senior is matching wits with other contestants for $75,000.

Junie Byju, a 17-year-old senior at Pine View School in Osprey will travel to Los Angeles next week to compete in the upcoming JEOPARDY! Teen Tournament.

Of the nearly 10,000 teens who took the online test, only 15 will face off in an intense academic showdown in the hopes of claiming the $75,000 grand prize and the coveted title of JEOPARDY! champion.

“The Teen Tournament is my favorite event of the year,” said JEOPARDY! host Alex Trebek. “Our teen contestants bring a burst of energy to the set and their unique mix of candor and intelligence makes me excited to see what this year’s group has in store for us.”

ABC Action News in Tampa surprised Byju at his home earlier this month to break the news to him that he made it on Jeopardy! The quiz show is syndicated on the station.

As ABC discovered, Jeopardy! is a family must:

Jeopardy is a family favorite. The Byju siblings sit to watch another episode as they do every night. Arjun says, "I love the game. I love watching it. I love the trivia."

They also love the competition. "We keep each other on our toes," says Arevind.

Arjun tried out last year but didn't make the final cut. This year he had his younger brother Arevind as his coach.

Arjun says, "He said, 'Look Arjun, if you want to get on, you have to be disciplined.' He made sure I watched it every day, and quizzed me on some big facts."

Arjun says knowing the answer is important. But being quick on the buzzer is crucial.

"You can't buzz in before Alex Trebek is done reading the question, you can't wait too long after he's done or you'll miss your opportunity," explains Arjun. He says timing will be everything.

Does the name Arjun Byju sound familiar, and looks familiar from the video above? That's because Arjun was on MTV's "Made" in December 2011 (which you can read about here on Patch.)

In order to qualify for the tournament, prospective contestants were randomly selected from those who passed the 50-question online test. These teens were then invited to attend regional in-person auditions consisting of a second 50-question test, an interview and mock game play.

The JEOPARDY! Teen Tournament will air starting Jan. 30, 2013.

JEOPARDY!, the winner of a 2011 Peabody Award and 30 Emmy Awards, including the 2012 Emmy for Outstanding Game/Audience Participation Program, was inducted into the Guinness Book of World Records for the most awards won by a TV Game Show. The series is the #1-rated quiz show in syndication with 25 million viewers each week. JEOPARDY! is produced by Sony Pictures Television, a Sony Pictures Entertainment Company. It is distributed domestically by CBS Television Distribution and internationally by CBS Television International, both units of CBS Corp.
