Photo Gallery: "Save the Closet" Benefit Show

A powerhouse lineup of comprised of some of Sarasota's favorite bands performed a benefit show at the bowling alley on Saturday night. Proceeds went toward supporting The Closet, a music venue and popular local hangout.

Friday and Saturday nights in Sarasota often present a challenge for indecisive music fans: More often than not, a number of talented musicians are performing at a variety of venues scattered throughout the downtown area and Gulf Gate. Hitting every promising show in one night is a goal that many strive for, but only the most dextrous time-jugglers can achieve.

This Saturday, however, was different. A stellar lineup comprised of some of Sarasota's most popular bands teamed up at for the "Sarasota Summer Blowout" concert hosted by The Closet.

Local favorites such as Sons of Hippies, The Equines, Fancy Rat, Igor the Band and The Black Bear Affair teamed up with Bradenton folk ensemble, The Huntsmen, to perform at a benefit show to raise money for The Closet, a popular Sarasota music venue that is currently in the process of relocating and renovating.

At the time of The Closet's grand opening in February, it shared a space with Everything But the Girl, a vintage clothing store in the Rosemary District that is now known as Carly's Closet. The 430 Central Avenue location served as a clothing store by day and at night, it transformed into a venue that hosted a variety of events ranging from concerts to "Drunken Shakespeare" performances by local thespians.

Having recently moved into a new location that is not yet up to code, The Closet is experincing some growing pains as it moves into its next phase. Saturday's show was a testament to the close-knit nature of the Sarasota music community, whose bands and fans rallied together to take part in one rocking benefit concert to support the locals' favorite homegrown "hang-out spot."
