Riverview Girls Tennis Team Claims Fourth Straight Region Championship

Manatee manages to win just one game in the nine sets played in Thursday's playoff to determine the Class 4A-Region 4 champion.

The Riverview High girls tennis team claimed the program's fourth straight region championship in convincing fashion on Thursday.

Playing on its own home court, Riverview swept all five singles matches against Manatee in a playoff to determine the Class 4A-Region 4 championship. Manatee, which finished second to Riverview at last week's District 7 tournament, only won one game in the nine sets of tennis played.

Senior Danielle Truitt recorded a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Dana Scott, who was filling in for injured District 7 champion Carolyn Chupa, at No. 1 singles. Classmates Abby Yull and Nicole Pivonka won 12 unanswered games against their opponents in No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively.

Junior Livia Toth registered a 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 4 singles match, while freshman Emily Schofield won all six games in the first set before her opponent in No. 5 singles defaulted.

With Riverview winning each of the first four singles match, the rest of the No. 5 singles match was essentially abandoned and the two doubles matches were cancelled.

The dual-match victory improved Riverview to 16-0 on the season and 62-3 in four years under head coach Kathy Rosenberg. Riverview has not lost a dual match the past two seasons and has lost one dual match over the last three seasons.

Riverview will play in the Class 4A FHSAA Finals, which will be held from April 20-22 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs. Manatee's Chupa, who defeated Truitt for the No. 1 singles championship at the district tournament, hopes to compete in the individual Class 4A FHSAA Finals during the same time at Altamonte Springs' Lake Brantley High School.

"I feel really good," Rosenberg said. "Our doubles teams are both very strong. We're deep all the way down, so this is the year for us to try to (win a state championship)."
