Sarasota Elementary Students to Distribute Toys to Needy

The donations will take place from 8 a.m. to about 9:30 a.m., tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 11 at South Shore Community Church in Sarasota.

Toys donated by the families of children at several schools will be distributed to needy families from 8am to about 9:30 am, on Saturday, Dec. 11 at South Shore Community Church in Sarasota. According to a school press release, the toys and other items will be given to families during a special breakfast at the church.

Students at Brookside Middle and Ashton, Brentwood, Emma E. Booker, Gocio, Gulf Gate, Lakeview, Tatum Ridge and Wilkinson elementary schools have been bringing in and wrapping toys for children in economically disadvantaged families in recent weeks.

Children at the schools have experienced the joy of giving to others through the project. A student at Wilkinson Elementary who was helping sort toys for donation said, "Someone is going to be really excited when they open this!"

The wrapped toys, along with food and other household items, will be distributed to financially struggling families that have been identified by schools and local organizations and agencies, including Mothers Helping Mothers and YMCA Schoolhouse Link. The recipients will include homeless and single-parent families, the release said.

The Sarasota Classified/Teachers Association also donated funds for the project. Members of South Shore Community Church are donating their time and other resources to organize the event.
