Sarasota Man Hurt in Wrong-Way Crash on I-275 in St. Pete

Investigators say Eugene Daniel Liddy of Sarasota was seriously injured when his car was struck by a driver headed the wrong way on Interstate 275 in St. Petersburg. Liddy was in serious condition and the other driver was killed, authorities said.

A Sarasota man was seriously hurt Sunday night when his car was struck by another driver who was headed the wrong way on Interstate 275 in St. Petersburg, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Eugene Daniel Liddy, 73, of Sarasota, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Bayfront Medical Center, investigators said. The alleged wrong-way driver, 26-year-old Constantine Nicholas Chaconas, of Palm Harbor, died at the scene.

Investigators say Chaconas was driving northbound in a southbound lane of 275 approaching the 22nd Avenue North exit ramp around 10 p.m. Sunday when he collided with Liddy's Toyota Solara, which was headed in the opposite direction.
