North Sarasota Operation Arrests 96

A 10-day joint operation in Newtown and north Sarasota arrested 96 people for various charges during the month of June.

A 10-day sweep of north Sarasota and Newtown netted 96 arrests, including 70 felony charges and 110 misdemeanor charges by the and the .

Similar to the , the agencies worked together by paying particular attention to known offenders, according to a release issued by the sheriff's office.

“We are committed to improving the quality of life that residents expect in north Sarasota,” said Sheriff Tom Knight. “Law enforcement is working with community partners to ensure that offenders know this area is not supportive of criminal behavior.”

The sheriff's office says that the operation enhanced apprehension efforts for specific crimes within a defined area in Sarasota. Most of the suspects have never been to prison, according to the sheriff's office.

• 27 of the arrestees had outstanding warrants

• 96 people arrested have a combined 725 prior felony arrests and 1,011 prior misdemeanor arrests. 

• 5 people arrested in the June operation were arrested during the January sweep — all for similar drug-related crimes.
