Update: Anita Baker Cancels Florida Tour

A little bit of Philadelphia soul is coming to Sarasota this fall.

John Legend will play Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall on Friday, Oct. 19. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 17.

John Legend has one nine Grammy Awards and started out as a session player and vocalist working with Lauryn Hill, Alicia Keys, Jay-Z and Kanye West before he launched his solo career, stringing together three Top 10 albums.

Most recently, Legend and The Roots released Wake Up! (2010), a compilation of music from the '60s and '70s all with an underlying theme of awareness, engagement and social consciousness which won two Grammy Awards for Best R&B Album and Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance.

The album is highlighted with tracks like "Little Ghetto Boy" by Donny Hathaway and Baby Huey and the Babysitters' "Hard Times."Wake Up! also includes John’s original composition "Shine," which won a Grammy award for Best R&B Song and is featured in Oscar award winner Davis Guggenheim’s domestic education reform documentary Waiting for ‘Superman.’

And Legend also has his funny side, contributing to A Colbert Christmas album with the ever seasonal and suggestive "Nutmeg."

This season, John starred as a judge on the ABC hit Duets with Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Nettles (of Sugarland) and R&B artist Robin Thicke.
