Sarasota's red light camera vendor American Traffic Solutions is showcasing footage of a scary crash that happened at Fruitville Road and Washington Boulevard.

The video, show above, is being released to raise awareness of the dangerous consequences when drivers fail to stop on red," according to ATS.

The video shows a car travelling at a safe speed toward Walgreens on the left, but a SUV zooms through, T-boning the car, spinning it 180 degrees.

“Our goal is to stop red-light violators and prevent collisions and injuries that result from running a red light. Drivers often make dangerous decisions at intersections and the results of red-light running can be tragic,” said Sarasota Police Department Officer John Lake in a statement for ATS . “We are publicizing this program and encouraging people to slow down on yellow and stop on red. Hopefully now drivers are thinking twice before putting lives at risk and running the red light."

Sarasota started its camera program December 2011, and in the first eight months, the vendor estimates that red-light running decreased by 35 percent.

The vendor says the Sarasota program contributed $540,247 toward parks, hospitals, medical research, and schools according figures from the Florida Department of Revenue released in June.

Each ticket costs $158 and $75 of that goes to the city, and that has resulted in huge numbers, WTSP reports:

Sarasota's red light cameras have generated $1 million in the first eight months while issuing 12,301 tickets ...

The vendor figures the system is preventing people from becoming repeat offenders.

The vendor estimates that 96 percent of the violators who paid their ticket have not received a second violation.
