What is the Worst Intersection in Sarasota?
No doubt, if you live or work in Sarasota, you've been stuck in traffic at some point in time. It's no secret that we've got plenty of super-busy intersections here, but which one is the worst?
We want to know, is there one Sarasota intersection that you avoid because it is too busy or dangerous? Do you despise driving through a particular intersection?
Vote for the "Worst Intersection" in our poll below.
It appears that some of the worst could be making Sarasota some money, too.
The city has generated $1 million in red light camera fines — 12,301 citations in all — since they were activated on Dec. 1, 2011, WTSP reports.
So far, red light cameras are at:
- US 41 and University Parkway
- South Tuttle Avenue and Fruitville Road
- South Tuttle Avenue and Bahia Vista Street
- US 301 and Fruitville Road
More are planned on Bee Ridge Road and US 41 this year, also WTSP reported.
If you don't see the intersection you think is the worst, add it in the comments section below.
Got a story to tell about the traffic? Be our guest! You can vent in the comments section, too!

Having driven in the Northeast tri-state area for 40 years, I find the idea of "bad" or "worst" SRQ intersections laughable.

The very worst intersection in Sarasota is our city's commissioner's table. More pile ups, barriers, constant construction and poor signaling. Always backing up and slowing us down, resulting in much damage and many casualties. Certainly, no clear signs of a right turn.

I don't think the intersections are bad....it is.the durations of the red lights at all the intersections listed that are too long.
This causes some drivers to go through the red lights....to avoid waiting forever for the light to turn green. Perhaps thought should go into shortening the time of the light staying red.....

I must say that that red light camera at 301 & Fruitville is a bit of a "trap" because, way BEFORE the intersection, like, halfway down the block, there's a sign that says "Photo Enforced, Including Right Turn On Red" but then, when you actually GET to the intersection, there is NO sign there saying "Right Turn On Green Only" so I'm guessing dozens of people have gotten ticketed unfairly there and it's just not right!! I don't know if this is true of those other camera intersections, too, but I'd guess it's probably illegal to have it set up that way and I'd bet it's probably also grounds to have the whole system declared "unconstitutional" or something, because it's basically a trap!

You are allowed to make a right turn on red here. It means that you must come to a complete stop, behind the pedestrian line, before proceeding. Same thing at Tuttle and Fruitville.

Very dangerous intersection is Shade and University Parkway. I work at the medical park there and more times than not I see "auto debris" in the road at that location. Use extra caution or when exiting/entering the medical park go up to Tuttle instead where the light is. It is especially hazardous during the rush hour.

There is no such intersection as Clark and South Shade

I don't know about the busiest intersection in SRQ but anyone living on Bay Shore Rd these last months I am sure would agree the speed limit of most vehicles exceeds the posted limit at least two fold and even 2.5times for some motorcycles. I like to speed myself but I take it over to Hwy 41 an 75 where you can do 50 in some sections and up on 75. We desperately need speed humps from where Bay Shore turns from Indian Beach to the straight away down BS Rd to SRQ Jungle Garden at Myrtle then forks left or continue straight. Three humps strategically placed along that stretch of road would control the speed limit to 25, better than as it presently exists. Anyone agree? If so how do we make it happen here? I'm a recent transplant from Northern California and not savvy of the regulations here yet.

When i worked on Bee Ridge Rd it was the Bee Ridge and U S 41 (southbound) intersection, leaving many drivers waiting multiple lights before making the turn onto Bee Ridge.
What I find dangerous now are the shared left turn lanes -- shared by opposite directioned traffic. I see vehicles moving into the turn lanes, only having to quickly mine OuT of them in order to avoid colliding with an oncoming vehicle who entered that same left turn lane - for a turn in the other direction. THIS IS A SPECIAL PROBLEM WHEN THE STRAIGHT BOUND TRAFFIC IN THE LANE YOU JUST GOT OUT OF MOVE SO FAST PAST YOU THAT YOU CAN'T CHANGE YOUR MIND AND RE-ENTER IT TO AVOID SAID COLLISION.
ESPECIALLY DICEY WHEN YOU'RE ON A MOTORCYCLE. IN THAT SITUATION. MAKES THE CYCLIST LOOK AT FAULT (as usual).

The bottleneck congestion along the trail around near Sarasota Memorial hospital, waldermere, and bahia vista head north going into the downtown area is the worst in the city in my opinion.

What is most dangerous in my opinon is when you have 2-3 cars turning left after the light has already turned red. I think the worst intersections for this are SB 41 and Bahia Vista, SB 41 and Bee Ridge, and SB 41 and Proctor. I usually avoid these intersections for this reason. I have seen many near misses at these intersections over the years. I think they should have red arrows like most major intersections (Fruitville and Tuttle, Bee Ridge and Cattlemen, 41 and Stickney Point to name a few).

41 and Bahia Vista without a doubt. Gridlock at all hours from that intersection stretching south past the hospital. And the rather bogus 15 mph "school zone" along Bahia Vista to the east of the light (despite that Sarasota HIgh students don't actually cross there in any sort of numbers, and the street doesn't even directly border the school or its parking lots) doesn't help matters.
But honestly, complaining about Sarasota traffic is on the whole a pretty ridiculous proposition. We haven't got it too bad. A lot of the congestion problems that do exist could be solved by simply adjusting ridiculously poorly timed / synchronized lights.

Lisa, you are very correct in that intersection is really dangerous. Xtra caution is needed.

I don't like the intersection at Proctor and 41. The red light turn signal is confusing. By the way, if there is a red arrow pointing right do you wait for the green arrow pointing right? If I wait, people behind me blow their horns. I thought the red arrow meant to wait for the green one, am confused.

I've found that no matter if there are snowbirds here or not, that stretch of US 41 from Webber north to the 41/301 split during rush hour is tedious. Is it as bad as other areas in the country that have worse traffic issues like Bill said? No, but it's just as annoying.
