I love old people. As we grow, we come to understand that the stories of their past are ones we will come to know, or have know, and we have much in common. The difference is, they've been there and can teach of a thing or two about the journey.
This story, "Swimming in Shallow Water" is based on a elderly lady named Christine, who’d lived in our little Florida beach community for years until she couldn’t live alone.
Christine was a lovely Southern Belle, who was full of energy and wonderful wisdom. Each day we’d met along her walk to our ferry to the beach, she’d give me a hug and tell me she loved me. More special, still, were our little talks about life and family.
“Swimming in Shallow Water” is completely imagined, but I’ve tried to preserve the essence of her being. Rest well, Christine. Yours was a long and beautiful journey.
