Daniel R. Strader, an attorney with Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP, a full-service business law firm with offices in Sarasota and Tampa, Fla., was recently a guest panelist at the Florida Bar Voluntary Bar Leaders Conference, held July 11 - 12, in Bonita Springs, Fla.
The two-day conference keeps current bar association presidents and executive directors updated on trends, news and other association information.
During the conference, Strader, chair of the Sarasota County Bar Association’s Diversity Committee, spoke about the committee’s initiatives, including its Richard R. Garland Diversity Scholarship program, its partnership with the Booker High School Law Academy and Pipeline Project. This project endeavors to reach the diverse youth of Sarasota County who are interested in a career in the law, including the legal profession and law enforcement.

The Diversity Committee partnered with Booker High School’s Law Academy to build a mock courtroom and provide local attorneys and judges to volunteer to teach classes on legal topics. Shumaker, Loop and Kendrick generously donated $1,500 to sponsor the mock courtroom last year.
Since it’s 2007 inception, the Sarasota County Bar Association’s Diversity Committee has awarded over 15 scholarships totaling $67,000 to deserving law school students from diverse racial, ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds. The committee is poised to award an additional $20,000 to the four interns currently working at several local law firms and the State Attorney’s Office this summer.
