Before you begin to decorate, make sure to check all of your decorations with cords. Avoid using cords that have become frayed or that have been patched. Make sure all of the bulbs are intact and of the correct voltage.

  • If hanging lights outside, make sure they are labeled indoor/outdoor and use a GFCI to minimize risk of shock. Plan ahead how many strands you will need and then don't overload your extension cords. Most light strands will have a max number that can be plugged in together. Be careful to not to place cords in highly traveled areas.
  • When using spotlights make sure that they are well ventilated and weather proofed. Also, keep them a safe distance from flammable materials. These lights can get very hot and nothing ruins Christmas faster than a flaming Santa!

  • Indoors, the same rules apply. Don't put cords beneath rugs as that can damage the insulation and create a fire hazard. Be sure to check all plugs and cords throughout the season and never leave the lights on when you won't be home.  Unplug cords when not in use.
  • To protect pets, consider pet proofing your cords on the floor with PVC pipe or purchase pet proof safety cords.  Bitter Apple Spray is recommended by my Vet to keep cats and dogs from trying to snack on your lights.
  •  And never, never, never stick pins or nails through your light strands. Always use plastic or insulated hooks to hang your lights.
  • So now you have no excuse not to get out there and decorate!
  • Have a safe and happy holiday season from our family at
