May 6, 2014 / Sarasota, Fla. — The Church of the Redeemer, 222 S. Palm Ave. in downtown Sarasota, warmly invites the community to its final Solemn Evensong of the church's 2013/2014 music season. At 5:15 p.m. Sun., May 18, baritone Daniel Cartlidge will sing Five Mystical Songs by composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. Cartlidge will be accompanied by a choir and chamber orchestra under the direction of conductor Todd Craven. Evensong is a choral service open to the public; a light reception will follow in Gillespie Hall.
Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) was an English composer who wrote music for symphonies, operas, film scores and more. He composed Five Mystical Songs between 1906 and 1911, basing his work on four poems by the 17th-century poet George Herbert. The songs are considered by critics to contain some of Vaughan Williams’ most memorable work.
Cartlidge serves as Redeemer’s assistant organist and contemporary music director, and has been a member of the church’s staff since 1998. He is also a baritone soloist with Redeemer’s choir, and serves as cantor for many of the chanted portions of the church’s sung liturgy.

Former Principal Trumpet for the Sarasota Orchestra, a position he held for 12 years, Craven made his conducting debut in January 2012 at the International Conducting Workshop held in Macon, Georgia. His subsequent studies have taken him to St. Petersburg, Russia, where he conducted in the Prizewinners' Concert with the Saint Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic, and to seminars in the Ukraine, Poland and the United States.
