5 Things: Sarasota Film Festival Starts Friday

Movies, celebrities and popcorn galore planned this week for the Sarasota Film Festival.

1. Hope you like popcorn, because you're going to need it this week. The starts Friday and tickets are selling fast. In addition to the 235 movies, the festival announced that Penelope Ann Miller will be at the festival this year as well as WWE superstars Kelly Kelly and Rey Mysterio, retired New York Giants legend Harry Carson, the Flying Wallendas and more will be on hand at various events. 2. Goodwill Manasota will set to break ground Tuesday for its , but the , according to the North Trail Citizens group who oppose the project. If the project is denied, any structure would have to be removed, the group contends. Stay with Patch for more on the Goodwill groundbreaking.

3. Volunteers are needed for the Florida Intercollegiate Championships and Florida Scholastic Sculling Championships and a pre-event meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Nathan Benderson Park near the spectator bleachers. For more information, call 400-7333.

4. Speaking of Nathan Benderson Park, it was sad to see the news that the park's namesake, Nathan Benderson passed away Saturday night. He appeared at the park on March 23 to help celebrate the lake's extension and was still spry, as he actively rode his bike and walked. 5. We're still waiting for more details on a Two men were taken to Blake Medical Center in Bradenton for gunshot wounds and the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office said they had a man in custody believed to be responsible for the shooting. Stay with Patch as more details are expected to be released.
