Historic Poem Promotes Witching Party for Halloween

Calling all ghouls, goblins and ghosts! A creepy poem that was written in the Sarasota Times newspaper promoted a Halloween party at an area high school.

Larry Kelleher, owner of the website www.sarasotahistoryalive.com  found this poem in a Sarasota Times newspaper promoting a party at the old high school on Main Street (before Sarasota High School was built on U.S. 41).

Attend, attend friends;
    Lend an ear!
The witches are back,
    They’ve all come here!
They buried them deep,
    But they won’t be still
On All Saints Night,
    When the wind blows chill.
They’ll meet you here
    At the hour of eight.
Come, see queer things
    And learn your fate.
Come in masquerade serene,
    Now don’t be late.
Come to the basement of the High School,
Where the black cats are expected.
A dime will let you in,
    But more won’t be rejected.
The gypsy queen will be there
To tell your fortune by looking in your hand.
Come old, come young,
And help out with the fun.
