Orioles Reach Host Birdland Golf Classic In Lakewood Ranch

Registration is now open for the third annual event at Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club.

The Baltimore Orioles' third annual Birdland Golf Classic is accepting registration for the Feb. 20 event.

The Orioles host the event through its charity OriolesREACH to benefit the Miracle League of Manasota, which dedicates itself to providing people of any ability to play baseball.

The golf classic starts with registration and lunch at 11 a.m. Feb. 20 and a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. For more information, visit www.miracleleaguemanasota.org.

The classic will feature a silent auction and the chance to play a round with current and former Orioles players and coaches. Manager Buck Showalter and current Orioles Jim Johnson, J.J. Hardy, Adam Jones and Matt Wieters are among the many Orioles scheduled to attend.

Registration is now open for golfers and corporate partners. There are multiple levels of participation available, including MVP Sponsor packages which consist of recognition as a presenting sponsor, a foursome with the opportunity to select your Orioles playing partner, four infield box seats to a 2013 Orioles Spring Training game, and more.  Since its inception, the Birdland Golf Classic has raised more than $56,000 for the Miracle League of Manasota.

For the 14,000 school-aged children with disabilities and their adult counterparts in Sarasota and Manatee counties, a synthetically surfaced baseball field with all the requisite amenities was built last year in Longwood Park, just off University Parkway in Sarasota.

Sarasota County committed $500,000 to the capital improvement of Longwood Park, while the Baltimore Orioles and Pittsburgh Pirates contributed $150,000 for the field.

Mark, this simply makes absolutely no sense at all. Matter of fact, It's 'safer' to back into a spotRead More than pulling forward. Mark, prior to backing in a spot, you already have a full visual of in front of you. Then, as you go to leave,. it's much safer to pull out, than to back out. Mark, you have this wrong pal and I'd love to see the data which lead you to believe that it's dangerous to back into a spot, versus pulling into it. I'm going to challenge you on this one Mark, and will do so when I go to court when I purposely get a ticket.

Does the convenience of reading a license plate supersede the safety of backing in and then headingRead More out?

Maybe not. I agree on the safety issue. The question needs to be, does the need of the police to beRead More able to read the plates supersede the safety concern? To be sure, there will be the usual crowd complaining about government (any government) intrusion, yada, yada, but that's the point that needs to be settled. If the police would agree that seeing the plates isn't necessary, then the entire issue would go away.

Try accepting that it was their time to go. No matter the way or the time, what will be will be.Read More It's not about blaming or getting "justice", death always happens when it is meant to...there are no accidents, only the circumstances and means that come into play to assist the transition of those who are leaving this world, in order for them to reach the next.
