Gershwin's Son in Sarasota for Special Premiere

Composer Alan Gershwin will be in Sarasota for the Florida premiere of his 'Gettsyburg Anthem.'

Composer Alan Gershwin – son of George Gershwin – will make an appearance in Sarasota for the Florida premiere of the "Gettysburg Anthem," which is a tribute to his father and to Lincoln's Gettysburg Address.

The performance will be part of Gloria Musicae's Independence Day concert at 4 p.m., on July 4, at the First United Methodist Church, 104 S. Pineapple Ave., in Sarasota.

According to a press release, Alan Gershwin has paid tribute to the work of his legendary father and also is a talented composer with his own highly praised musical scores.

Gershwin was born in 1926, and raised secretively under the name Albert Schneider. Gershwin later served in the U.S. Navy, and then returned to the United States to pursue a musical career. Gershwin also served as a consultant to the U.S. State Department.

The multimedia concert, with the Gloria Musicae Singers, will showcase works by George Gershwin, Irving Berlin and Stephen Foster, the Andrews Sisters and from the Big Band era.
