Homeless Man Sentenced in Sarasota Murder

The 24-year-old victim leaves behind a wife and child. His body was found behind the Girls and Boys Club.

A 19-year-old man was sentenced to 30 years in prison on Monday for the murder of Jovonne Corn, whose body was found in March 2013 behind the Boys and Girls Club.

On March 14, 2013, Sarasota Police officers found the body behind the Sarasota facility, in the 1800 block of 19th Street. Tips from the public helped lead investigators to the suspect.

Kevin Peterson, who is homeless, was charged with murder. On Monday, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison.

This case is one the Sarasota Police Department was actively working for five months. 

Corn was 24 years old and left behind a wife and young child.

During open court, the father of Jovonne Corn, thanked the Sarasota Police Department their hard work on this case.

“We are happy with the outcome of this case.  It keeps a dangerous criminal off the streets and it helps bring closure to the family of the Jovonne Corn,” said Lt. Pat Ledwith, Bureau of Criminal Investigations, Sarasota Police Department.
