As the weather is heating up so is the fishing. The bait has moved onto the flats and is everywhere. Some of the bait is still small so we have been putting 2 or 3 greenbacks on a hook. There is larger bait on the flats but it takes chumming the smaller bait first and then the larger bait is underneath.
As the bait moves across the flats and into the backwaters the fish are following and schooling up. The water temp is up so the fish have been most aggressive in the morning and evenings. In the heat of the day the snook and redfish are moving deep into the mangroves where there is some moving water. August is a great time to find large schools of trout, Spanish mackerel, and other active fish like jacks and sharks. We had a 4-hour charter this week where we caught 40 – 50 fish. Just look for the bait and birds and you will find the fish. The trout have been holding in 5 – 7 feet depth on the grass just off the shallow flats holding bait. You will find the larger snook and redfish around the deeper docks and in the passes. The big schools of tarpon have moved out however there are plenty that stay. You will find the best Tarpon fishing off the beaches and pass on the north end of Anna Maria Island. The snapper bite is also hot with a lot of small snapper feeding on the baitfish and the larger snapper holing under the skyway bridge rocks. Good Fishing and be safe!
