WILLIS SMITH PROJECT EARNS AWARD OF MERIT

SARASOTA, FL – The St. Thomas More Church in Sarasota, a Willis A. Smith Construction project, recently received an Award of Merit from the Gulf Coast Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) for the expansion and renovation of the church. Architect Julian Norman-Webb, project designer, accepted the award at the 2014 AIA Sarasota Design Conference.

Work on the church included a 10,000 square foot expansion of the music room and worship space. The entire church also received a full interior renovation totaling 30,000 square feet that included roofing, flooring, HVAC, new bathrooms, and interior and exterior lighting. The Sanctuary now enjoys enhanced acoustics with new sound panels on the walls and coffers in the ceiling to reduce echo. Outside, a new 69 foot bell tower was added featuring four bells located inside a uniquely hidden architectural cross.
