Halloween is a fun time for the family, but not always for our four-legged kids. As much as we like to get them involved in all we do, it’s important to remember this can be a “scary” time for them. Here are a few things you can do to keep your pets safe and secure during the holiday.
Even the most social dogs and cats can get stressed from so many visitors coming to your door. Keeping pets in a separate room away from the front door may be best. It will also help keep one of your pets from slipping out the door and into the night. Keeping a leash on your pet is another option if keeping them in another area isn’t possible. Make sure to have proper identification on your pet in the case they do get out the door while you’re handing out candy. If you tend to have a lot of trick-o-treaters, sitting outside might be your best bet.
Remember to keep the candy out of reach of your pets. Chocolate can be especially dangerous to our four-legged friends. If your pet consumes chocolate or candy, call your veterinarian as soon as possible. Emergency clinics are open after hours in the case that your pet needs veterinary attention.
Costumes can be fun to dress your pet in, but make sure you do not leave it on while they are unattended. Pets can get caught up in their costumes, chew on it or injure themselves in an attempt to get out of the costume. Also take the temperature into consideration, as they may become overheated in heavy costumes. Make sure the costumes don’t have small parts that can be ingested. If your pet doesn’t like the idea of a costume, a festive bandana might be a good alternative.
Make sure that any electrical cords for Halloween decorations are tucked safely away to keep pets from chewing on them. Keeping decorations out of reach is best, especially if you have a “chewer” in the family!
Outdoor pets are best kept indoors during the Halloween holiday. Unfortunately, there are those who would harm pets found out and about during this time and cats are a more common target.
If you are thinking about taking your dog out walking for Halloween, just consider that even the most social dog can be intimidated by “monsters” and strangely dressed people. This can be a very stressful situation rather than a relaxing walk.
