Bobby Jones Hosts Successful Cross Country Event

The natural beauty of the British Course at the Bobby Jones Golf Club combined with an unusual venue for cross country running was a hit with over 400 high school students from the tri-county area yesterday afternoon as they competed in the inaugural Tri-County XC Championships.

“It was a fantastic event,” said Sue Martin, Bobby Jones Golf Club Manager.  “The runners, spectators and the organizers loved it.  For a golf course, this was outside-the-box marketing. It was a good community relations builder, plus a revenue generator. We’re looking forward to hosting the event again.”

Junior Varsity and Varsity cross country teams from 19 high schools throughout Sarasota County, Manatee County and Charlotte County ran alongside the British Course during the tournament. The 5K run started at the 10th tee on the British Course with the students running on the fairway next to the cart path. The finish line for the 3.1 mile run was near the 18th hole.

“A big thank you goes to the organizers from Riverview High School, who hosted the event, for leaving the golf course spotless. You never would have known over 400 runners and hundreds of spectators were here,” said Ms. Martin.

Bobby Jones Golf Club is owned and operated by the City of Sarasota and offers three courses with a total of 45-holes. Visit www.BobbyJonesGolfClub.com to learn more.
