The
next Freethinkers’ Briefing, held in cooperation with the Lifelong Learning
Academy (lla-sm.org), will feature Marden Paru in a presentation which will
include a discussion on the following topics: An overview of medical and health
practices from the original Hebrew Bible; Did our ancestors get it right?; Was
early medicine “folk medicine” or science-based?; The theological guidelines
and influence in medical practice; Key elements of biblical ethics pertaining
to saving lives; Do ancient Israelite ritual practices prevent disease?; the
outbreak of skin diseases seen early on as punishment for sin; Does modern
medical practice draw on early Biblical text?



 



Marden
Paru is dean and co-founder of the Sarasota Liberal Yeshiva (an adult Jewish
education institute), former director of continuing education at Temple Beth Shalom,
and an ethics instructor at the Melton Adult Mini-School sponsored by the
Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee. He has also been an instructor at LLA
since the spring of 2013. He previously trained as a social worker and served
for many years as an executive of non-profit organizations. Paru studied
religion and sociology at Yeshiva University (N.Y.C), earned a B.A. in
sociology and political science at the University of Tulsa and an M.A. at the
University of Chicago’s School of Social Service Administration. Paru was also
a doctoral fellow and faculty member at Brandeis University in Waltham,
Massachusetts.

about complex issues in the fields of religion, morality, ethics and
justice.  Upcoming Freethinkers
Briefings, Two programs coming up include Bishop Bridget Mary Meehan on “Roman
Catholic Women Priests: A Spiritual Revolution or a Holy Shakeup” on May 2nd;
and “Everything You’ve Ever Wanted to Know About Mormonism” presented by Ryan
T. Cragun on June 6th.  All
sessions will be held beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the Unitarian Universalist
Church of Sarasota.
