Paper, Clay and Canvas: Artwork of Award Winning Artists

Paper, Clay & Canvas

Artwork of award winning artists: Patsie McCandless, Gail Wynne, Scott Menaul

Spring has arrived in Florida and with it an exhibition that urges us all to celebrate. “Paper, Clay and Canvas” revels in the eternal springs of creativity from three well-known area artists – imagineers all: Patsie McCandless, Gail Wynne and Scott Menaul.

Patsie McCandless creates her PaperSolo art entirely from paper – no paint, no pen, no ink. Her work always astonishes with its intricate, fine cutting and layering of exquisite papers. Her pieces range in themes from flora and figures to vessels, vistas and winged creatures; some of her most intriguing pieces are in the abstract dimensions. Her passion for paper is obviously surpassed by her imagination in creating these pieces: elaborate layers of silver that become a cathedral; marbled swaths of gold in deep blue-greens that transform into sea and sky; spiraling glitters morphing into an entire galaxy. A feast for the eyes and a banquet for the senses!

Gail Wynne is an explorer in the art of handbuilding clay. She has developed her own techniques, and her own individual expression. She emphasizes experimenting with form, texture and color, resulting in elegant pieces that amaze and delight. Some are functional as well as sculptural, as in her unique bowl or vase shapes, and her marvelous sea creatures - with a little surprise waiting on the inside. She carves her own clay stamps for creating unique surface design, and incorporates Nature’s forms and patterns, that speak to both ancient and contemporary designs.

Scott Menaul is a trailblazing abstract surrealist, whose work unabashedly compels the viewer to participate in every canvas. He creates with a sense of infinite color, pattern and form; all within a precise design that often uses his interest in math and science to create amazing geometrical forms. Scott accents reflective, glowing qualities, with a complicated interplay of light that allows for rich, saturated color. His resulting work is irresistible in a deep, personal and spiritual manner.

All three artists are donating a portion of the proceeds to the St. Petersburg Opera Co. and the North Suncoast Guild of the Florida Orchestra. Come enjoy “Paper, Clay and Canvas”, in the always arising, always surprising creativity of these intrepid artists – and their amazing creations.
