5 Mistakes Employers Make With New Employee Orientations

Orientations for new employees are make it or break it times. When they go well, new workers solidify their relationship with your organization; this makes them want to work hard, strive to fulfill their goals, and allows them to picture a long term future within your company. Done poorly, however, orientations leave new workers ready to run for the door.

While most companies do their best to try to make new employees feel welcome on their first day, they aren’t always successful. Even the best intention can go horribly wrong if you make the following mistakes.

Orientation Mistakes to Avoid

  • Overwhelming- Starting work at a new place is overwhelming on its own, but when you add facts, figures, names, and faces to the mix, all packed into one shift, your new employee will likely feel a little frazzled. Instead, consider offering them an employee handbook. This handbook can be filled with all the information you want them to know, but it can be taken home and read at their leisure.
  • Videos- Orientation videos can be helpful, especially if you’re short-handed and want to make sure your new workers get the information they need to be successful in their new position. However, long, boring videos are a big no-no. For one, they are long and boring. They turn an exciting day into one that requires a nap. Secondly, they take away from the orientation process. This is a time when the employee needs to get to know his or her environment, co-workers, and the corporate culture. They can’t do that when they are stuck in the conference room all day.
  • Lectures- Lectures have their place and their purpose, but, just like the videos, they take away from the orientation experience.
  • Being Unprepared- There’s no worse feeling for a new hire than walking into work on the first day and finding out you aren’t prepared for them. Make sure they have a desk, a computer, a phone, and even their own email address. Make them feel as if you want them to be there. If you fail to be prepared, they will feel as if you don’t care whether or not they show up each morning.
  • Rushing- As an employer, there is no doubt your day is full of activities, meeting, and important phone calls. Rushing through new employee orientation, however, is not going to make your day any easier. If you don’t have the time to welcome them properly, make sure you find someone who can. However, be there when they arrive and be the one to introduce them to the employee who will be showing them the ropes.

Employee orientation means more than just giving a new worker a tour of the office. It means providing them with the information, tools, and time that they need to feel welcomed into the company. An orientation can change their view of your company, for better or for worse. Which one are you striving toward?
