Never Be the “Bare Minimum” Employee

If you're looking for job security in these economic times, or possibly for a promotion, read the following five tips from HH Staffing Services to increase your value today.

Want to become more valuable to your employer? Although your experience and skill level are key factors in the hiring process, too many employees settle in on these credentials and mistakenly pass up opportunities to create better relationships, bring the "wow factor" to their job and truly become an irreplaceable asset to the company.

If you're looking for job security in these economic times, or possibly for a promotion, read the following five tips and increase your value today:

1. The Positivity Factor - Everyone likes to surround themselves with people who bring a winning attitude to their day. Regardless of how skilled you are, if you are a complainer who can only recognize what's wrong instead of what's right, --your days are numbered. You may not think so, but it's true in more ways than one. Not only could you eventually lose your job, but even more importantly, --happy, positive individuals live longer! Before spending another day bringing others down, have a heart-to-heart with yourself. Are you grumpy? Do you make others uncomfortable? Are you unapproachable? It's time to check your attitude at the door.

2. Be Remarkable - Doing what's expected is part of the "bare minimum crowd." Always over deliver and you'll earn a reputation for being remarkable. You'll be amazed at how doing that little bit more than expected will go a long way to increase your value. If you look around, there are numerous opportunities to overdeliver every day!

3. Become the Go-To Guy (or Girl) - Becoming an expert at something important to your organization will make you an invaluable resource. Are you an expert in social media? Help with the company Facebook profile. Is photography your hobby? Take photos that can be used to promote the company. Anything you can do to position yourself as "the go-to person" for a particular niche is extremely valuable.

4. Make the Boss Look Good - Do you know how successful people move up the corporate ladder? By making your boss look good. What do I mean by that? Your quality of work, the efficiency of your department, your sales figures, and attention to project deadlines all make you look like a well oiled machine, --and that makes your boss look like he or she is running a strong team (because, of course, he is!) He will get noticed, you'll be looked more favorably on, and when your boss moves up the ranks, you're very likely to go with him!

5. Always Bring Something to the Table - Have you ever been in a board meeting or brainstorming session where a few people took notes while others talked out ideas? Be that person who brings something to the table, even if you're only there to observe. If you have a solution, an idea, or a different viewpoint, don't be afraid to speak up. It might be just the answer everyone is waiting for.

If you're going to truly be valuable to your organization, you'll need to think of ways to stand out, do more, and bring the "wow factor" to your work. Take the tips we provide above and let us know if you've got a few of your own! Leave a comment. We'd love to hear from you.
