  1. Don’t talk too much – Showing your communication and verbal skills is certainly important for any interview, but making the fatal mistake of rambling on and on about things that are not pertinent to the job could cost you a good opportunity.  Be sure to do your homework; research the company and the job description, only relating to pertinent information when speaking.
  2. Know the facts – When it comes to previous employment, you should know the dates of your employment and what you did on a day-to-day basis right off the top of your head. Review your work history and be sure what you say matches what your resume says. Besides the basic facts, keep in mind your new employer will want to know you are a proactive employee who can think for yourself. Be sure to have examples ready in your mind.
  3. Listen – Good communication skills involves listening. Sitting in the hot seat can sometimes make it difficult to focus. If your mind starts to wander, bring it back to the present moment. This will make it easier to frame the appropriate responses.
  4. Posture – Did you know that you can literally change the way you are viewed just by making a few tweaks to your posture? Don’t slouch, don’t roll your shoulders inward, and refrain from putting your hands on your face or neck.
  5. Watch your words – In a professional setting, the use of slang words will not cut it. The interviewer will be paying close attention to your verbal communication or lack thereof.  Practice some basic interview questions so you are more comfortable with the delivery of your answers.
  6. Dress for success – Your attire is the very first thing the interviewer will notice. This is not the day to roll out of bed just a half hour before your interview and grab the first thing you see in your closet. It will be extremely beneficial if you wake up an extra hour or two earlier to spend time grooming yourself; essentially you are sellingyourself! Be proud! Besides, the more time you have, the better chance you have to take a couple of deep breaths to gather your thoughts before walking into your interview. That alone will bring you clarity.
  7. Be Yourself – Be the best possible version of yourself, –key word “yourself.” Access your inner rock star doing your interview. You have your own gifts, talents and abilities (we all do) so be the best, most confident version of yourself!
