Want to Shine as a Temporary Employee? Here's 5 Way

If you want to become more valuable and possibly turn your current temporary position into a full time job, you may need some assistance with productivity.

"The road to failure is paved with good intentions."

If you want to become a more valuable employee, and possibly even turn your current temporary position into a full time job, you may need some assistance in the area of productivity. Contrary to what many believe, productivity doesn't come naturally for most. In fact, it takes a purposeful plan of action that is followed day in and day out. Don't worry, it's not that complicated. By following the steps we've outlined, you'll be able to quickly recognize your areas of low-productivity and determine how to overcome them.

Step 1 - Recognizing the Problem and Learning to Say No

Don't be hard on yourself. It's not that most of us are intentionally non-productive. Who would really want that? Often, we simply work against ourselves and create productivity issues. We allow things to pile up, take on too many tasks, volunteer for things we just don't have time for, and end up in a frazzled mess.

The first step to increased productivity is to understand that your home life bleeds into your work life. It's impossible for it not to. For example, if you were up until 1 am working on a project for the Girl Scout troop you're daughter is involved in, you're going to feel the repercussions at your job the next day. You may experience lack of clarity, fatigue, confusion or all three. How to quickly solve this problem? Learn to say no. Recognize the fact that you're only one person and you can't be everything to every person. Make it your goal this week to reassess your commitments, prioritize and learn to put your own peace of mind first.

Step 2 - Operate on Your Body's Natural Clock

Everyone has their own timetable. Are you more productive in the morning? Maybe you get the most accomplished right after lunch. It's important to organize your day around your body's natural rhythms, tackling complex tasks when your energy level and mental clarity is at its highest. Save the mundane or mindless tasks for periods when your energy dips.

Step 3 - Prioritize Your Tasks

One of the most important things to do is often the most overlooked. Prioritizing tasks takes a lot of mental effort and sometimes we just rush into our day without stopping to make a list of what needs to be accomplished and when. Committing the tasks of the day to paper may seem like a time waster, but actually it's a time saver. Be sure to block out reasonable periods of time for each required task. If your workload and deadlines become overwhelming, talk to your supervisor. He or she will actually appreciate the fact that you want to live up to your commitments and notice possible problems before they occur.

Step 4 - Establish Routines

Our brains are wired to execute patterns. Establishing routines as much as possible will make you more productive at work. An enormous amount of time is often wasted "figuring out" how something will be accomplished. If you realize this, you can begin to choose the best, most efficient way to complete recurring workflow. Setting reasonable deadlines will also help you to stick to routines, since one day's workload won't carry over to the next day.

Step 5 - Taking Breaks

Although you may look at breaks as a time waster, there's nothing further from the truth. Complex tasks, such as writing, researching, or developing strategies, take a lot of mental effort and your brain can only focus with proper clarity for a limited amount of time. Stepping away from a particularly complex task will allow your brain to rest and provide you with a fresh outlook. Breaks will actually help you to complete tasks more quickly.
