Is Sarasota Teacher Florida's Best?

A $10,000 grand prize was at stake for the 25th annual award, announced Thursday night.

Riverview High teacher Katrin Rudge – one of five finalists for Florida Teacher of the Year – has lost to an educator from Orange County.

Dorina Sackman, of Westridge Middle School took the top honor and the $10,000 grand prize, when the Macy's Florida Department of Education Teacher of the Year for 2014 was named Thursday night.

Yet being one of five finalists out of 180,000 public school teachers was extraordinary recognition for Rudge, a Marine Science teacher at the Sarasota High School.

Gov. Rick Scott crowned the winner in a ceremony in Orlando. 

The five finalists were:
  • Katrin Rudge, Riverview High School (Sarasota County).
  • Nancy Smith, Citrus High School (Citrus County).
  • Apryl Shackelford, Northwestern Middle School (Duval County).
  • Patricia Gair, Cypress Lake High School (Lee County).
  • Dorina Sackman, Westridge Middle School (Orange County).
