Sarasota Man Dies In Drunken Driving Crash

Scott Parker,55, was hit by a suspected drunken driver who fled the scene and who shouldn't have been on the road driving anyway, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

A 55-year-old Sarasota man has died after a suspected drunken driver struck his car on Washington Boulevard early Friday.

Florida Highway Patrol responded to U.S. 301 and 47th Street at 12:50 a.m. where Siosaia K. Fonua, 29 of Bradenton was driving a 1995 Mercury on northbound U.S. 301 and struck a 1999 Ford Mustang driven by Scott R. Parker, 55, of Sarasota at 47th Street.

The Mercury struck the left side of the Mustang and Fonua fled on foot and was later located by law enforcement, according to Highway Patrol. Parker was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Highway Patrol.

Fonua suffered minor injuries and was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital for his injuries and faces DUI Manslaughter, driving on a suspended license and leaving the scene of a crash involving a death, according to Highway Patrol.

Fonua , of 4324 55th Ave. Drive East, has a lengthy criminal record in Manatee County, according to court records.

In 2001, Fonua at the age of 18, was charged with driving under the influence and was sentenced to probation, which was later violated, and to perform community service, according to court records.

Fonua pled no contest to felony robbery charges in 2006 and received probation, which was violated in 2008, but received credits for time served in jail, according to court records.

In 2009, Fonua was charged and convicted for DUI and providing a false name to Manatee County Sheriff's deputies and driving on a suspended license for a third or subsequent offense. He refused to submit himself to a blood alcohol test during that arrest, according to court records.

Fonua's license was suspended again in October 2011 for not appearing in court, according to court records.

I am so sorry for the Parker family as well as the fonua family. My sister is having fonua's baby. We understand the pain the Parker's are going through at this time. Our cousin died the same way about 8 years ago but in California. It was devastating! God bless you all at this time and may Parker rest in peace.

Scott was one of the most talented Clowns when we worked together on the Ringling Bros.and Barnum & Bailey Circus in the early 70s. I will always remember his great double take in the circus ring,he made at least a million people smile in his life,we should all do as good. Love Kevin Bickford

Scott was one of the great clowns on the Blue show and his classic double take was almost alien in its intensity. He was a great juggler, superb mime and very funny. I'll miss him. My deepest sympathies and blessings go out to his family after such a senseless tragedy. Make em laugh Scotty.

Scott was a transcendent being. Yes, he was a clown. Yes, he knew how to make people laugh. But he was something more: One of a kind; Mesmerizing performer; Followed his own path; Made humanity larger by sharing his own unique humanity. I will never forget him. And I will ever be grateful to him for something he told me 37 years ago. In just one sentence, he gave me encouragement that has inspired me ever since. Thank you Scott, for sharing your gift and your amazing self with the world.

I was going to work early Friday morning. It was still dark. I came across the accident scene at 301 and was shaken to see a smashed up car and what appeared to be a person covered up on the road. Terrible. Feel so bad the person this happened to. He seemed to be a nice guy from what people say. I got hit by a drunk driver that ran a light a few years ago. I was fortunate that he slammed into the the passenger side. The car was lost but I only got my head cut opened. It is bad enough that Fonua was driving drunk. But, to try and run away......disgusting.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all the friends and family of Scott Parker. Scotty was my roommate for 2 years while on the Ringling show. Though we are the same age he had an air of confidence that made him seem older and wiser to me. He was a good performer when he got to clown college. He was a great performer in short time. His double take was second to none. Scotty made you watch him on the track and he could make the audience watch you at the same time and you would laugh !!! I’m so grateful that we were able to re-connect after so many years. When we chatted it was like we were in constant contact all along. So many great memories, it’s a shame that we will not have the opportunity to make more. You are sadly missed old friend, until we meet again, I’m sure it will be like old times. with LOVE, Kenny Colombo

Deepest Sympathies to all of the Parker family! I worked with Scotty and Jan on the Vargas show inthe late 80's early 90's. May God offer his blessings and comfort to you and your family during this horrible time!

Cally Devereaux Willle I had been trying to locate my cousins Scotty and Skippy Parker for a couple years and finally came across this. Scotty was about three years old when I moved to Massachusetts and lost contact through divorces in the family. Scotty looked the same as he did as a 3 yr old. Wish I could have found him sooner. We were in the area many times. He seems to have been very fortunate to belong to an extended close family in Sarasota. Scott and Skip are loved and remembered fondly by their family. Hope Skip and I can connect again. Many cousins would love to be in your life again.
