Crystal Sand Classic Returns To Siesta Key

Weekend Events: Crystal Classic | Harvest Hoedown | Medieval Fair | Noise Ordinance 3 Party | Veterans' Day Parade

1. Beautiful professional sand sculptures will grace Siesta Key Beach Thursday through Monday for the annual Siesta Key Crystal Classic Master Sand Sculpting Competition.

Admission is $5 per day and the venue is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Proceeds benefit Mote Marine Laboratory's sea turtle research and conservation programs. Shuttles are being offered from Phillippi Estate Park to Siesta Beach, $5 per vehicle, per day.

Attendees might recognize one of the artists at this year's event: Rusty Croft. He's the host of Travel Channel's Sand Masters and had filmed Sand Wars on Siesta Key in December.

2. Join  for a Harvest Hoedown from 6 to 10 p.m. on Friday at 4405 Desoto Road. The nonprofit helps adults and children with disabilities and proceeds from the event go toward the organization. Admission is free. Country singer Adrian Ray is scheduled to perform. The event includes a hayride, beer, food, games and more.

3. Grab yourself a turkey leg and get Medieval on your heiny this weekend. The Sarasota Medieval Fair runs Saturdays and Sundays, Nov. 10, 11, 17 and 18 at the Sarasota Fairgrounds, 3000 Ringling Blvd. Hours are 10 a.m.- 6 p.m., rain or shine. Single day admission for adults is $16.95; Students, seniors and active military tickets are $14.95, and tickets for children from ages 5 to 12 is $8.95. 4. Some of the area's best original bands will pump up the volume on Saturday at the Noise Ordinance 3 CD release party.

Organizers say 36 bands and musicians were selected by popular vote to participate in the third installment CD project. The event will take place Saturday from noon to 2 a.m. with a rain date of Sunday.

The party is at Cock and Bull. Admission is $10 at the door; no advance sales.

Bands include Another Roadside Attraction, Bard and Mustache, Ben Hammond, Big Blu House, Bill Vinhage, Brazos the Rat, Devil Made Microphones,Dune Train, Dylan Jon Wade, I.G.O.R. (Intelligent Good Old Robot), Joe B., Justin Layman, Matthew Frost, Mélange, Passerine, Physical Plant, Radio-Free Carmela and the Transmitters, Reggie Williams,SECRETscience, Sheri (aka Sheri Seigerman Nadelman), Shoebox Monsters, Soul Purpose, Spark Notes, Team Cybergeist, Ted Stevens and The Doo-Shots, The Common Flaw, The Human Condition, The Joneses, The Northwest, (the) Umbrella Cult, The Wallies, Third Society, Twinkle, Villanova Junction, Waking Giants, World Collision.

5. The annual Veterans’ Day parade in downtown Sarasota on Veterans’ Day will start at 10 a.m., Sunday. The parade begins at Main Street and Osprey Avenue. A program will begin at about 11 a.m. at the parade's conclusion at Chaplain J.D. Hamel Park at Main Street and Gulfstream Avenue. 

The keynote speaker will be Tuskegee Airman George E. Hardy, Lt. Col. USAF (Retired). Hardy became the youngest Tuskegee Airman when he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in September 1944.  He flew 21 combat missions over Germany, 45 combat missions over Korea, and 70 combat missions during the Vietnam War.  Hardy was honored with the Distinguished Flying Cross with valor, the Air Medal with 11 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Commendation Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster.
