Safe Sex Halloween Bash 'Deadtime Stories' — Michael's On East

9 p.m. Saturday

This year’s theme is “Deadtime Stories” and guests are invited to take a terrifying trip through the land of twisted fairy tale fun with stops along “what’s under the bed” and “who’s in the closet.”

The event will feature an open bar (event is for ages 21+ only), delicious late-night bites, DJ Imminent and dancing, live entertainment – including a star turn by “Safe Sex Fairy” Beneva Fruitville, themed photo booth by noted local photographer Cat Pennenga, Planned Parenthood’s famous take-home “shag bags,” and shocking surprises.

Cemeterror - A Haunt to Die For — 5718 Antilles Drive

 7-10 p.m. Friday and Saturday — FREE

There's nothing like going to a stranger's house in the neighborhood who knows how to deck out a Halloween house better than some Christmas homes. In this case, it's the Spera Family. Find yourself here at Cemeterror—a PG-13 yard haunt, or haunted house, that promises to be bigger this year with Zelda's Side Show. Get scared for a good cause by donating to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund at the door.

Calling all ghouls and goblins for spooktacular fun with the whole family. Dress in your best Halloween costume to scare or impress the judges. Enjoy games, prizes, candy, and a costume contest!

Costumes will be judged at 7 p.m. for ages infant-12.

Crawleyween Halloween —  Crowley Museum & Nature Center, 16405 Myakka Road

5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday — FREE

Crowley Museum & Nature Center offers something for the kids with a "haunted" discovery path, hayrides, a costume contest, trick-or-treating, bobbing for apples and more. Not A Clue Adventures will offer concierge camping, too.

Frightmares Haunted House — 7111 S. Tamiami Trail

7:30-11:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday; 7 p.m. Sunday-Tuesday; 7 p.m.-midnight Halloween

Frightmares boasts itself as Florida's best haunted attraction-pitting itself above those theme parks in Tampa and Orlando. This isn't some amateur hour—horror director John Rusnak has been in the haunted house business for 20 years and produced his own horror film, House of Blood. This year it's doubling the blood and terror with two haunted houses—Tomb of Terror and Psycho Asylum— at one location.

Desoween V: Trail of Haunted Legends: A Family Friendly Spooky Hike — De Soto National Memorial, 8300 De Soto Memorial Hwy, Bradenton

The Rocky Horror Show—Venice Theatre, 140 Tampa Ave. West, Venice

8 p.m. Thursday-Sunday; Midnight Saturday; Runs through Nov. 3

It's astounding. Time is fleeting, and madness takes it toll at the live stage production of The Rocky Horror Show as it was originally intended—a play.

It's rare to find a live stage production of Rocky Horror as oppose to some dancers in front of a movie screen (though the play seems to be more common in Florida this year), so by all means, drive to Venice. This production is in Venice Theatre's Pinkerton Cabaret Theatre.

If you don't know the story by now, it features two virgins getting lost in Transexual Transylvania, aliens, music and scenes not appropriate for children and pre-teens.

4th Annual Fruitville Pumpkin Festival—Fruitville Grove Farm Fresh Market, 7410 Fruitville Road

10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sunday— FREE

Oh yes, there will be pumpkins. Plus a ton of events and activities for the family including pony rides and hayrides, live music, pumpkin painting, hay play area, a 40-foot slip-n-slide, giant human water balloons, craft vendors and more.

Masque of the Red Death Gala — Powel Crosley Estate, 1 Seagate Drive

6 p.m, Halloween

The Powel Crosley Estate hosts a special gala based on Edgar Allan Poe's Masque of the Red Death story. It features an interactive haunted carriage house with performances. Features dancing, potions and food. Recommended for 21 and up. Costume attire encouraged.  

Tickets: $75 per person; $90 at the iron gates. Reservations recommended. (Portion of proceeds will benefit the preservation of the Powel Crosley Estate.)
