Weekend Events: Chalk Festival Takes To Sarasota Streets

Weekend Events: Sarasota Chalk Festival | 1776 | Glenn Campbell | Capitol Steps | Dirty Bourbon

1. This is the 2012 Sarasota Chalk Festival's big weekend with a bit of the big top.

This year's theme is Circus City USA, and Sarasota's own King Of The Highwire Nik Wallenda will walk across a 3-D version of a tightrope walk at 3 p.m. Thursday on South Pineapple Avenue.

The Festival happens through Nov. 6 in  Burns Square where international artists will converge side-by-side with kids to chalk up the neighborhood.

One of the biggest draws will be Kurt Wenner, a Baltimore-based 3-D street painting artist known worldwide for his work.

More murals are on the way, too, as the "Going Vertical"  campaign will take over walls from 18 buildings around the city.

For those looking to chill to the music, Chillounge will turn the streets of Burns Square into a comfortable area to sit on high-end patio furniture while enjoying a night out with friends listening to live music. That takes place on Laurel Street between South Pineapple Avenue and South Orange Avenue from 5 p.m. to midnight on Friday, 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday

2. Head to Main Street today to "Meet The Delegates" of "1776." Asolo Repertory Theatre's Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and John Adams and town criers will make their way down Maiin Street from Links Avenue to Five Points by horse-drawn carriage to promote the local production of the musical history play. The event will start at 2:15 p.m. and is expected to last until 2:45 p.m. As for the play itself, that begins Nov. 16 with previews starting Nov. 13. Check with Patch next week for a preview of the play.

3. Sunday could be your final chance to see Glenn Campbell perform live in concert. Campbell stops at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall fo his "Goodbye Tour" wanting to give one last hurrah to his fans as he battles Alzheimer's Disease. Alongside Glen on this tour will be three of his children, Cal, Shannon, and Ashley, who provide tunes as well as support for Campbell, who has at times accidentally wondered off stage during the tour and starts to repeat songs due to his Alzheimer's but his family is there to keep the mood light and help the Rhinestone Cowboy along. Tickets are priced from $10-$65. For more information, call the Box Office at 941-953-3368, or toll free 800-826-9303, or visit www.VanWezel.org.

4. Also at the Van Wezel, before Campbell stops by, political satire group Capitol Steps will take the stage Saturday for some pre-election humor with song and dance. Tickets cost $10-$40.

5. Join WSLR for some gypsy folk circus rock with The Dirty Bourbon Band at 8 p.m. Friday, 525 Kumquat Court.

The New Orleans draws from a rich diversity of musical backgrounds – with four musicians playing a revolving set of instruments and a ringmaster.  New Orleans guitarist and blues singer Kid Red will open the show with his whisky voice and wailing Texas blues guitar chops.

Tickets are $8 in advance/$10 at the door. Tickets are available at Rocketman, Fogt’s Music, Sarasota Guitar Company in Bradenton, the WSLR studio and online at www.wslr.org.
