A woman was arrested Sunday evening after she allegedly beat a 10-year-old boy because he asked her if she would come with him on his first day of school, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.

Lora Katherine Wyatt, 30, of Sarasota, was charged with child abuse and possession of marijuana after she allegedly became intoxicated and got physical with the boy who is a family member.

The SCSO deputies responded to the home after a neighbor said she could hear the boy yelling for help from inside the house.

The boy told deputies that Wyatt became upset with him because he went into her bedroom to ask if she would go with him on his first day of school.

He said she grabbed him by the shirt collar and pulled him to the ground, yelling at him to leave the room, according to the report.  She then began punching him on his torso, a report said. Deputies noted that the victim’s shirt had been torn and he had scratches and bruising on his body.

Wyatt said she did shove the victim, but that she did it in self-defense after being bit on the arm, the report said. The deputy said Wyatt did have a bite mark on her right arm but it appeared to be self-inflicted, as it had lipstick around it. The boy, the deputy wrote, was not wearing lipstick.

When deputies searched Wyatt, they found a baggie of marijuana in her purse.

Wyatt was taken to Sarasota County Jail where she is being held without bond.

It doesn't say she was/is the mother? If not, where is the mother? Where is the father? OUTRAGEOUS. Poor sweet kid just wanted a grown up to go to school with him.

It's pot smokers like this dumb woman, who deserves to go to jail for a long time for beating her son, who make good pot smokers like me and most of the rest look bad.
PennyRex August 20, 2013 at 07:51 AM
@Richard.....it says she was intoxicated, not smoking. They just found the stash in her purse, she acted the way she did because of the booze, not the other stuff.

Who cares about excuses!? The point is that this poor child was beat by an adult In the home for simply wanting the security of someone to go with him to his first day of school. That... folks.... Had NO viable excuses in my book!!

@thegrrrr8est: marijuana is a good thing because: It heals people in many ways http://www.realfarmacy.com/still-believe-nature-got-it-wrong-top-10-health-benefits-of-marijuana/ By legalizing marijuana people can use a natural plant to help them rather than the miriad of drugs and chemicals that pharmaceutical companies try to get us addicted on. By legalizing marijuana you keep many people out of prison who should not be there and thus not taxing the system and the general populace as much. By legalizing marijuana people smoke fewer cigarettes and drink less alcohol, which is much more harmful then marijuana. By legalizing marijuana, industrial hemp becomes much more attractive which is better for the environment to harvest and use for products then any other plant By legalizing marijuana you will then take some of the hypocrisy out all the hands of those who are trying to control you and me. Any other questions? Caio

The federal government likes to say that there is no medical use for marijuana, yet the very same federal government owns a patent on the medical use of marijuana. Go figure

"Somebody tell me again how legalizing marijuana is a good thing?" What an uniformed question. As if pot smokers are dangerous killers. Pot usually mellows one out my friend. It is legalized alcohol that is the likely culprit here. If you are going to ask ridiculous questions, do a little research 1st so you do not appear so clueless.

The sad this is, and I've seen this numerous time, a child has a ton of potential and the parent mocks them for wanting to better themselves. I heard a could mom's tell their kids to stop reading books makes them look like a geek, etc. Also, a child makes in innocent mistake and the mother laughing and calling them a silly retard, etc. There's so few good parents out there.

If you are going to leave a comment then at least READ the whole story! She is a family member not the childs mother, she was found with a baggie of pot IN HER PURSE! that doesn't mean she was high on pot at the time, her picture looks like she is a meth head, pot does not make you a violent ass hole that is her personality right there! As far as legalizing weed that is a two edged sword, you have responsible people and you have trashy people, the trash will always ruin it for the responsible ones, if used correctly pot has good benefits but theres always going to be someone out there that says they are using it for the medical benefits but they are just getting high legally, but prescription drugs are the same way and just about anyone can get hold of them just as easy! No win situation!

Kathy she is a drug addict degenerate criminal that IS his mother. I've been looking for an update on this sweet boy. I don't know if this is called responsible journalism but this is what other outlets are saying. The boy was first abused at the age of 5 months. She is a chronic drug user that has DUI, petty theft charges, and other crimes on her wrap sheet. They said the grandmother was the one that called the cops. The boy 10 years old at 11:05 PM??? (why is he up that late?) went in his mother's room and ask her to go to the first day of school with him. She was drunk and tried to say the kid attacked her. When they searched her purse that's where they found the pot. How the patch got it so wrong I have no idea. The other news outlets have account of the details I just posted. The herald was one.
