Debit Card, Cash Stolen During Lido Beach Visit

Someone stole a debit card and cash from a man's car while it was parked on Lido Beach and tried to make two unauthorized purchases, Sarasota Police said.

Sarasota detectives are looking for a man who they say stole a debit card from a car on Lido Beach and then tried to use it twice at a nearby gas station.

The victim had parked his Ford Expedition SUV at 400 Benjamin Franklin Dr. on Aug. 1, telling officers he locked it but left the windows down about 4 inches to keep it ventilated while he visited the beach.

Later that afternoon, he discovered $240 cash was missing and was notified by his bank that an unauthorized user had tried to make two purchases at a BP gas station on Longboat Key, according to Sarasota Police. Both attempts were denied.
