Gun Control: What's Sarasota Saying?

Should there be more controls on gun ownership, given the fatal shooting in Newtown, Conn.? We asked Sarasota residents. Feel free to leave your comments below.

As people across the country talk about tightening gun control legislation in the aftermath of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., we asked local residents to share their thoughts:

Here’s what Sarasota Patch Facebook fans had to say:

The NRA with its bullying and threats to destroy politicans who do not agree with them have caused the death of the children in Connecticut along with anyone else murdered by assault weapon..every member of the NRA who thinks assault weapons should be banned should resign from the NRA and tell them why!.. the NRA exists to support the gun and ammunition manufactures.. why should you spend your money to protect these manufactures....no one needs an assault weapon to hunt or protect them selves.. get real !

So who stops the actual criminals from getting assault weapons? Our government? Right, tell that to fast and furious.....
I guess the honest responsible person has no rights anymore.

There is no need for average citizens to own assault rifles or semi or automatic weapons. there should be tougher laws governing gun ownership, we make it harder to drive a car than to own a gun.

you don't need an assault rifle to kill someone let us not forget the two British tourist who were killed this year here in Sarasota or the EMS / Fireman who was shot just a couple of months ago by a jealous ex-boyfriend of the women he was dating. There also are the many teens we have heard of who have had guns in their possession a couple resulting in deaths this year. This does not take into account the many, many shooting that have taken place in our own Newtown district or the drive by shooting or the guns involved in criminal acts again most not being assault rifles. What we have to remember it's not the guns that kill, it's the irresponsible people who have the guns. Many people go to great lengths to get guns when they know they can not legally own one or they are going to do something illegal with the gun. This is the type of person we must be aware of. We must not be afraid to let someone know they intend to cause harm to others or commit a crime. When others choose to stand idly by an not get involved they are as guilt as if they pulled the trigger.
