UPDATE: Painter Killed in Crane Accident Has Been Identified

The man was found pinned between the building and a crane, according to Sarasota Police.

The man who died in a painting accident at Sarasota Military Academy on Wednesday morning has been identified as 55-year-old Mitch Phelps, of Sarasota, Sarasota Police said Thursday.

A man who died  after getting pinned between a building and a crane as he was painting, according to Sarasota Police.

The man was doing painting work at the Sarasota Military Academy, at the intersection of North Orange Avenue and 10th Street, just before 10 a.m. Tuesday.

The Sarasota Herald-Tribune reports a crane collapsed at the campus and blocked traffic along North Orange Avenue. 

Officers say two witnesses found the man pinned between the building and a "crane type machine." CPR was performed, and he was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital unconscious, police said.

The man was working by himself for Service Painting of Florida, authorities said. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration was planning to investigate, according to police.

The military academy, at 801 Orange Ave., is a charter high school run in conjunction with the Army JROTC program.
