Police: Man Escapes Out of Patrol Car

The man was taken into custody for sleeping in front of a Sarasota library, police say.

Officials say Brandon Kesti, 27, broke out of the back seat of a patrol car after officers arrested him around 7 a.m. Monday morning.

Kesti was taken into custody after he was found sleeping on a bench in front of the Selby Public Library around 6:45 a.m., according to a media release from the Sarasota Police Department.

According to officials, Kesti couldn't provide identification, gave false names and was taken in custody for unlawful lodging out of doors and giving a false name after being lawfully detained.

Kesti was handcuffed and placed in the back seat of the patrol car, police say. According to officials, Kesti finally gave his real name during the drive to the Sarasota County Jail.

As officers approached the jail, they heard Kesti moving around and found that he moved his handcuffs to the front and was trying to get out through the window which was partially down for air flow, according to the release.

Officials got out of the car while Kesti continued to pull away, police say. He was able to stand up and take off, injuring an officer in the process, according to reports.

Officers tracked him down and walked him into the jail.

Kesti has been charged with felony escape, misdemeanor lodging out of doors, misdemeanor resisting without violence and misdemeanors giving a false name after being lawfully detained.
