Sarasota Man Indicted On Federal Gun Charges

If convicted, Roderick Sears of Sarasota could spend a decade in federal prison.

A Sarasota man is facing a grand jury indictment on gun charges that could land him in federal prison for up to 10 years.

Roderick B. Sears, 34, of Sarasota, was indicted Wednesday by a grand jury for being a felon possessing four firearms and marijuana with the intent to distribute, U.S. Attorney Robert E. O'Neill announced. Sears was arrested July 27.

If convicted on all counts, Sears, who also has multiple felony drug convictions, faces a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in federal prison.

Sears was taken into federal custody Wednesday at his business without incident, but he first threw a blue bag which was recovered and contained 10 bags of marijuana weighing approximately three ounces, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office.

This was a joint investigation by the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Manatee County Sheriff's Office and the Sarasota Police Department, and is part of an expansion of the partnership between agencies to reduce gun crime and ensure safe communities throughout the region, according to the sheriff's office.

Federal penalties can include up to 10 years for being a felon with a gun, a five year mandatory minimum for carrying a gun to a drug deal and a 15 year mandatory minimum federal prison sentence for defendants with three prior violent felonies or drug crimes, according to the sheriff's office.

There is no parole in the federal system.

Federal authorities would not release additional details concerning the case.

This is directed to anyone who has NO KNOWLEDGE of REALLY what has happened!!! I am an employee and long time friend of Mr Sears and with EVERYTHING he has done for the community, for our homeless, for our disadvantaged youth and anyone else who has received assistance from Mr Sears...its a SHAME to see this happening. With the economy spiraling DOWN THE TUBES, look at how many are being arrested daily just trying to keep food on the table....and YOU Mr Bello leave a comment like that!! I hope you see in the future how Cup O Noodles and Hot sauce feeds your family!! Maybe you wont be so quick to judge next time!! YOU ARE NOT THE PICTURE OF PERFECTION!! NO ONE IS!! I am educated, have a family and am struggling myself...I thank Mr Sears for all he has done for me and my family!

I have known Mr Sears for 10+ years. I have seen the good he has done for many friends, family and complete strangers. He has saved lots of people from giving up on themselves. He has done more for the community than politicians have done in a long time. He doesn't hurt people he helps them. He definitely is not a threat to anyone and doesn't deserve to be locked away from society. He is not the one they should try to make an example out of. Take a good look at the good he has done and then try to sleep well at night thinking you did the right thing!!!!
