Sarasota Police Officers Are Going Pink

To show support for women and men fighting breast cancer and remember those who have passed away, officers will show their support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month by wearing either a pink police badge or a pink mourning band over their badge.

“I thought it was important because breast cancer is a disease that affects everyone," said Officer Kimberle Vespia, who spearheaded the effort. "Seeing that people and the public generally look at officers as authoritative figures, this gives us a chance to show our human side.”

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, exceeded only by lung cancer.  Death rates from breast cancer have been declining since about 1989, with larger decreased in women younger than 50.  These decreases are believed to be the result of earlier detection through screening and increased awareness, as well as improved treatment.

The North Port Police Department, Longboat Key Police Department, Venice Police Department and the Lee County Port Authority Airport Police Department will be joining the Sarasota Police Department wearing pink badges or pink mourning bands during the month of October.
