Sarasota Truck Driver Injured In North Tampa Crash

Mitchel Thomas Grek of Sarasota was treated for minor injuries in a Friday afternoon crash on Interstate 275.

A Sarasota truck driver is being treated for minor injuries following a crash in north Tampa that blocked southbound Interstate 275 for more than an hour.

Florida Highway Patrol responded to southbound I-275 north of Busch Boulevard for a crash at 3 p.m. involving a 2007 International tractor trailer and an unknown Ford truck.

The tractor trailer driven by Mitchel Thomas Grek, 26 of Sarasota, traveled in the outside travel lane when a Ford pick-up suddenly changed lanes directly into the path of the tractor trailer, according to Highway Patrol.

Grek attempted to avoid the crash and steered toward the outside shoulder, but over-corrected his steering and overturned, causing the semi to rest on its side blocking all southbound lanes, according to Highway Patrol.

No contact was made between the truck and the semi and no additional description of the Ford is available, according to Highway Patrol. The semi sustained $10,000 in estimated damage, according to Highway Patrol.

Grek was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital to be treated for minor injuries while his passenger Re'ne Olguin, 37 of Arcadia was treated for minor injuries at the scene, according to Highway Patrol.

Witnesses to the crash are asked to call Highway Patrol at 813-631-4020.
