Sheriff: Sarasota Brothers Cooked Up Meth at Homeless Camp

Authorities say they found over 19 grams of clear fluid that tested positive for meth inside the brothers' tent at a homeless camp.

Two brothers were arrested Thursday for allegedly manufacturing methamphetamine at a homeless camp in Sarasota, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Department.

David Haring, 19, and John Bedford, 30, both of 4400 block of Flatbush Ave., Sarasota, were each charged with manufacturing and trafficking over 14 grams of meth after a special investigations detective discovered they were cooking the drug in their tents at a homeless camp  just east of the intersection of Cattleman Road and Webber Street, according to a report.

Inside the tent, detectives found several materials, including batteries and lighter fluid, that are used for cooking a “significant amount of meth” on July 31, according to Wendy Rose, spokesperson for SCSO.

The detectives were informed of the operation after they brothers tried to make a large pseudoephedrine, the report states.

Rose said that both men admitted to making the meth during an interview with deputies. They were taken to Sarasota County Jail were they are being held without bond.
