A missing cattle dog who works with local law enforcement and was last seen in the Sarasota area may be in Tampa, officials said Tuesday morning.
"Doc," a 60-pound, specially trained cattle dog who works for the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, escaped from his special trailer Saturday on Interstate 75 near the Fruitville Road exit.
A witness told Sgt. Ron Cain with the sheriff's office that a motorist pulled over and tended to the dog, giving it water and saying he was going to take it to his Tampa home.
The witness said the dog had road rash from jumping out of the trailer but that he looked fine and was in good shape. There was no further information on the man who helped the dog or the car he was driving, Cain said.
Cain's brother, Detective Lowell Cain, uses Doc to help herd loose cows that have escaped or are blocking roadways. The dog is Lowell Cain's personal dog, and it has become a mascot for the sheriff's office's agricultural unit.
A $500 reward is being offered for the person who returns the dog. Anyone with information is asked to contact Ron Cain at 813-318-5681 or the
Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office at 813-247-8200.
