Grandmother Beaten, Found Dead by the Side of the Road

A couple spotted the 62-year-old woman's body in Palmetto, when they were out for an early morning walk.

The body of a woman found by the side of the road Thursday in Palmetto has been identified as 62-year-old Bernadette Phicien.

Her death is being investigated as a homicide, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

According to the Bradenton Herald, Phicien – a grandmother of eight – had been beaten to death and was found in her night clothes. The newspaper reported that Phicien, who was originally from Haiti, worked at West Coast Tomato as a produce picker and loved her job.

A couple on their morning walk discovered the woman's body in the 2900 block of 24th Ave. E., Palmetto, at about 6:15 a.m. Thursday.

Phicien, who lived in Palmetto since 2008, was last seen Wednesday night at her home, investigators said.

Because there was trauma to the body, detectives are treating the case as a homicide.  An autopsy has been performed but a cause of death will not be released at this time.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 941-747-3011 or Crime Stoppers at 866-634-TIPS.

This is just terrible! We must stop things like this from happening. I am praying they find who did this and prosecute to the fullest extent of the law. Prayers and sympathy for her family. Lord God hold them close to you in their time of deep sorrow, ♥

This is very sad. Another reason I'm packing heat when I'm out and about. I'm sure the Palmetto PD and the Manatee Sheriff Dept. are working very hard to solve this and the other violent crimes like the night club shooting. Right after they finish next week's prostitution sting and pot smoker busts.

I am very sadden by the news of this that someone could take the life of another in such a horrific way to. Who ever did this should turn themselves in to handle what is to come of this how could you take a mother and a grandmother from their family how dare you, you deserve whatever comes to you. IF it isn;t handled by the Law it will be handled when you stand before the lord jesus christ and tell him how and why you took her life away from her. I will Keep this family in my thoughts and prayers. May God be with you all in your time of sorrow.
