Florida Governor to Open Rowing Masters Championships

Gov. Rick Scott vetoed $5 million in state funding for the center in his first year in office. Now he's a supporter.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott is scheduled to make an appearance Thursday for the opening of the U.S. Rowing Masters Championships at Nathan Benderson Park.

The championships start at 8 a.m. Thursday and run through Sunday.

But as the center has gained an international reputation, state dollars have flowed to it – $10 million in the past two years.

The Sarasota facility is a contender to host the 2017 World Rowing Championships, which would bring 42,000 athletes and their fans to Sarasota and be an economic boost to the region.
