Congressman Vern Buchanan could stop the madness in Washington. The votes for ending the shutdown are there. All Vern needs to do is stand up to his Tea Party friends and join others in telling the Speaker to call for a vote.
A minority of Tea Party Republicans are holding America hostage. Vern Buchanan is still going along with these tactics that threaten to undermine our economy and our democracy.
The President and Democrats in the Senate have offered to negotiate on the budget numerous times, and that offer remains - but not with a gun held to the head of the American economy. That's not negotiation, that's extortion. So why won't Vern act to stop this unreasonable behavior?

It really shouldn't take much courage on Vern's part. A poll of readers in the Sarasota Herald-Tribune asked 'should the federal government shut down?' On October 8th, with nearly 900 votes cast, 89% said NO, the government should not shut down -- and only 11% said yes. While it's not a scientific poll, public opinion clearly leans toward ending the shutdown.
